Grieving The Loss of a Pet, Emotional Support Animal or Service Animal? Compassionate Support with a Licensed Psychologist

If you’re feeling heartbroken, overwhelmed, or struggling with guilt after the loss of a beloved pet, you're not alone. Dr. Bennett is a Florida-licensed psychologist specializing in pet loss, grief counseling, and the human–animal bond. She offers compassionate, personalized therapy to help you process your emotions, navigate complex grief, and honor your pet’s memory with care and meaning.

Meet Dr. B.

Dr. Bennett is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years of experience supporting individuals through life’s most difficult challenges. She provides a safe, compassionate space for clients to explore their emotions, build resilience, and heal. A lifelong animal lover, Dr. Bennett specializes in pet loss and grief therapy, combining her clinical expertise with a deep understanding of the human–animal bond.

Her work experience includes supporting combat military veterans through therapeutic connections with service and emotional support animals. She has also contributed to an emotional support dog training program with the Florida Department of Corrections, helping shelter dogs and inmate handlers find healing through structured, rehabilitative training.

Dr. Bennett has been an active member of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement since 2017 and actively volunteers with farm animal rescues, including Critter Creek Animal Sanctuary in Gainesville, Florida—one of her favorite causes.
After the heartbreaking loss of her beloved soul dog in 2017, Dr. Bennett experienced firsthand the profound and often misunderstood grief that comes with losing a cherished animal companion. At the time, she struggled to find a mental health provider who truly understood this unique form of loss. The only support she discovered was through the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB), where she joined their grief support programs as a participant.

Through this deeply personal healing journey, Dr. Bennett made a heartfelt vow to the founder of APLB that once she had moved through her own grief process, she would devote a part of her private practice to the psychological care of pet lovers, animal caregivers, and the broader field of animal wellness.

Today, she fulfills that promise by offering specialized pet loss counseling and bereavement therapy—helping others navigate the complex emotions of anticipatory grief, end-of-life decisions, and the lifelong bonds we form with animals.
